Technical courses
For adventurous divers wanting to explore beyond the limits of recreational diving, GUE's technical diver programmes offer a progressive system of training that equip the diver with the skills, knowledge and confidence to undertake dives requiring the use of helium-based breathing gases and efficient decompression. Building upon the solid foundations introduced with the GUE Fundamentals course, the GUE technical diver courses will help you competently and safely realise your diving ambitions...

TECHNICAL DIVER
LEVEL 1
GUE's Technical Diver Level 1 course is designed to prepare divers for the rigors of technical diving and to familiarize them with the use of different breathing and decompression mixtures.

Tech 1 training focuses on expanding the fundamental skills learned in the GUE Fundamentals course and is designed to cultivate, integrate, and expand the essential skills required for safe technical diving. Areas covered include problem identification and resolution, and building the capacity for progressively more challenging diving. In this class, students will be trained in the use of double tanks/cylinders and the potential failure problems associated with them; the use of Nitrox for accelerated and general decompression strategies; the use of Helium to minimize narcosis; and the applications of single decompression stage diving, with respect to decompression procedures.

The course focuses on Nitrox and Trimix as breathing gases for dives down to 160 feet/48 meters, and provides an excellent foundation on which divers can build their technical diving experience and prepare for GUE's Technical Diver Level 2 course (Tech 2).

The Tech 1 course qualifies divers to use Triox 30/30, Trimix 21/35 and Trimix 18/45 as bottom gas, and either 50% Nitrox or 100% oxygen for decompression.
Course content

The Tech 1 course is normally conducted over a six days, requires nine dives and a minimum 40 hours of instruction, encompassing classroom, land drills and in-water work.

Prerequisites...
Applicants for a Tech 1 course must:

  • Submit a completed registration form, a medical history, and a liability release to GUE Headquarters
  • Be physically and mentally fit
  • Hold insurance that will cover diving emergencies such as hyperbaric treatment, e.g. DAN Master-level insurance or equivalent
  • Be a nonsmoker
  • Obtain a physician's prior written authorization for the use of prescription drugs, except for birth control, or for any prior medical condition that may pose a risk while diving
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Have earned a GUE Fundamentals 'Technical' pass
  • Have a minimum of 100 logged dives beyond open water certification

TECHNICAL DIVER
LEVEL 2
GUE's Technical Diver 2 course is designed to enhance deep diving proficiency while using helium breathing gasses and oxygen-enriched decompression gases.

Other course outcomes include: the use of multiple stages; the use of Trimix with greater percentages of helium; gas management; oxygen management; extended decompression; accelerated, omitted and general decompression strategies; dive planning; and management of multiple cylinders. Tech 2 will take Tech 1 or Tech 60 divers and increase their capacity for deeper diving utilising multiple stage and decompression cylinders to a maximum depth of 75m with 60 minutes of decompression.
Course content

The Tech 2 course is normally conducted over six days; it requires seven dives and a minimum 40 hours of instruction, encompassing classroom, land drills and in-water work.

Prerequisites...
Applicants for a Tech 2 course must:

  • Submit a completed registration form, a medical history, and a liability release to GUE Headquarters
  • Be physically and mentally fit
  • Hold insurance that will cover diving emergencies such as hyperbaric treatment, e.g. DAN Master-level insurance or equivalent
  • Be a nonsmoker
  • Obtain a physician's prior written authorization for the use of prescription drugs, except for birth control, or for any prior medical condition that may pose a risk while diving
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Be a certified GUE Tech 1 Diver
  • Must have a minimum of 25 dives beyond Technical Diver Level 1 certification; at least fifty dives on double tanks and at least 25 should utilize a decompression cylinder
